{"id":76,"date":"2008-05-10T16:30:22","date_gmt":"2008-05-10T20:30:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.timeoff.org\/rick\/?p=76"},"modified":"2019-09-05T13:24:24","modified_gmt":"2019-09-05T17:24:24","slug":"contrasts-in-sensitivity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.timeoff.org\/rick\/2008\/05\/10\/contrasts-in-sensitivity\/","title":{"rendered":"Contrasts in Sensitivity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today the (snail) mail brought a couple of items that warrant some comment.<\/p>\n<p>For my Dad, who <a title=\"Sad News\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.timeoff.org\/rick\/2008\/05\/04\/sad-news-my-dads-passing\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">passed on not two weeks prior<\/a>, came a survey solicitation from <a title=\"Saint Peter&#039;s University Hospital\" href=\"https:\/\/www.saintpetershcs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Saint Peter&#8217;s University Hospital<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0(now Saint Peter&#8217;s Healthcare System, link updated). He spent just shy of twelve days in their ICU. During his stay, the decline in his health was dramatic and rapid, ending with his discharge to hospice. That decision involved several different departments and quite a few physicians, specialists and staff. The survey request ended with this closure, &#8220;Thank you, and please accept our best wishes for your good health.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For me and my family, from <a title=\"JFK Medical Center\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jfkmc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">JFK Medical Center<\/a> which runs the <a title=\"Haven Hospice Program\" href=\"http:\/\/www.havenhospicenj.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Haven Hospice Program<\/a>, came a hand-written envelope. It contained a letter extending their sympathy, which went on to describe the comprehensive set of services available to us to help cope with our loss.<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t say enough about the staff at Haven Hospice. Although we spent less than 24 hours there, the degree to which the staff has extended an amazing amount of goodness and support is nothing short of amazing.
